How much nicotine is actually in a Zyn?
A US Zyn has 3, 6, 9 or 11 mg of nicotine on the can. About half of it leaves the pouch in an hour. What the label means, per pouch and per can.

A regular US Zyn has 3 mg or 6 mg of nicotine per pouch. Zyn Ultra, authorized by the FDA in August 2026, has 9 mg or 11 mg. That figure is the nicotine sitting in the pouch. Not all of it comes out: in the one study that measured it, a little over half left the pouch during an hour under the lip.
So the honest answer has two numbers in it, the one printed on the can and the one that reaches you, and the second one is smaller and less certain.
The number on the can
Every Zyn can shows a strength in milligrams, and it means nicotine per pouch, not per can or per gram. Zyn’s US FAQ lists four strengths across two lines:
| Line | Strengths | Pouches per can |
|---|---|---|
| Zyn | 3 mg, 6 mg | 15 |
| Zyn Ultra | 9 mg, 11 mg | 20 |
The 3 mg and 6 mg pouches were the first nicotine pouches the FDA authorized, in January 2025. The Ultra line followed on August 21, 2026: ten flavors at 9 mg and one, Smooth, at 11 mg. Other 11 mg flavors were still under review when it was announced.
The label is close to what is in the pouch. When researchers weighed and tested unused pouches, 3 mg Zyn averaged 2.9 mg and 6 mg averaged 5.9 mg.
How much nicotine leaves the pouch
This is the number people actually want, and it has been measured once, in a 2020 study. Seventeen experienced snus users each held a single Zyn still under the upper lip for 60 minutes, without moving it around with their tongue. The used pouches were then tested for what was left.
| Pouch | Nicotine in it | Left the pouch in 60 min | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zyn 3 mg | 2.9 mg | 1.6 mg | 56% |
| Zyn 6 mg | 5.9 mg | 3.5 mg | 59% |
| Zyn 8 mg (older strength) | 7.5 mg | 3.8 mg | 50% |
Three things to know before leaning on those figures. The study was funded by Swedish Match, which makes Zyn. The participants were long-term snus users, and the authors say absorption may differ in people who are not. And “left the pouch” is not quite “reached your blood”. With nicotine gum and lozenges, part of what comes out is swallowed and broken down before it gets there. The same probably happens with pouches, but no one has measured how much.
The same study found something more useful than any single figure. A tobacco snus pouch labelled 8 mg released only 2.4 mg, less than the 6 mg Zyn, because far less of its nicotine came out. The number on a can is only comparable between pouches of the same kind. It does not tell you how a Zyn compares with snus, dip or a different brand.
The study only tested a full hour, which is also the most Zyn tells you to keep one in. If you take pouches out sooner, less will have come out, but nobody has published how much less.
How much nicotine is in a can of Zyn?
Multiply strength by count:
| Can | Label nicotine per can |
|---|---|
| Zyn 3 mg, 15 pouches | 45 mg |
| Zyn 6 mg, 15 pouches | 90 mg |
| Zyn Ultra 9 mg, 20 pouches | 180 mg |
| Zyn Ultra 11 mg, 20 pouches | 220 mg |
Using the study’s extraction rate, a can of 6 mg Zyn used an hour at a time releases somewhere around 50 mg. That is a rough extrapolation from a single small study, not a measured figure, and real use varies a lot.
The Ultra row is the one to notice. A can of 11 mg Ultra has more than twice the label nicotine of a can of 6 mg Zyn, and a third more pouches in it, so “a can a day” means something very different depending on which can. The 2020 study predates Ultra, so there is no comparable measurement of how much leaves an Ultra pouch.
For your own count and strength, the nicotine calculator works out the label total and an estimated absorbed range.
Is a Zyn the same as a cigarette?
A cigarette contains roughly 10 to 14 mg of nicotine, and a smoker absorbs about 1 to 1.5 mg of it. Set that next to the 3.5 mg that leaves a 6 mg Zyn and it is tempting to say one pouch is worth two or three cigarettes. You will see that claim online.
The numbers do not support it cleanly. One is what reached the blood, the other is what left a pouch. The timing is also completely different: nicotine from a cigarette reaches the brain 10 to 20 seconds after a puff, while blood levels from a Zyn climbed for the full hour in the study and peaked around when the pouch came out. Those are different experiences of nicotine even when the totals are close.
Zyn strengths outside the US
Zyn is sold in other countries with a different range, and much of what you read online is written from outside the US. In the UK, Zyn’s own strength guide lists pouches from 3 mg up to 16.5 mg. If a figure you have read does not match your can, check which country it came from.
What the number does not tell you
Strength tells you how much nicotine a pouch carries. It does not tell you how many you use, how soon after waking the first one goes in, or how long you keep each one. Those change the day’s total at least as much as the milligrams do, and they are the part most people estimate badly. How many Zyn a day is too much works through the daily math, and the dependence test takes about two minutes if you want a read on the habit itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much nicotine is in a Zyn?
In the US, regular Zyn comes in 3 mg and 6 mg per pouch, and Zyn Ultra in 9 mg and 11 mg. The figure on the can is the nicotine in one pouch. In a study funded by Zyn's maker, about 56 to 59% of it left the pouch during an hour of use.
How much nicotine is in a 6 mg Zyn?
6 mg is the label figure for one pouch. When researchers measured unused 6 mg pouches they averaged 5.9 mg. After an hour held still under the lip, about 3.5 mg had left the pouch and 2.4 mg was still in it.
How much nicotine do you actually absorb from a Zyn?
In the one published study that measured it, about 1.6 mg left a 3 mg Zyn and about 3.5 mg left a 6 mg Zyn over 60 minutes. That is what left the pouch, not an exact figure for what reached the blood, and it will vary with how long you keep it in and from person to person.
How much nicotine is in a can of Zyn?
A regular can holds 15 pouches, so 45 mg of label nicotine at 3 mg and 90 mg at 6 mg. A Zyn Ultra can holds 20, so 180 mg at 9 mg and 220 mg at 11 mg.
Is one Zyn equal to a cigarette?
Not in a way the numbers support. A smoker absorbs roughly 1 to 1.5 mg of nicotine per cigarette, and about 3.5 mg leaves a 6 mg Zyn in an hour, but those figures are measured differently and the nicotine arrives much more slowly from a pouch. Treat any 'one Zyn equals X cigarettes' claim as a rough guess.
What is the strongest Zyn?
In the US, Zyn Ultra Smooth at 11 mg, authorized by the FDA in August 2026. In the UK, Zyn's own strength guide lists pouches up to 16.5 mg.
